Former teacher lands HR job with career walking deck

Today, I am really excited to share a success story from my friend Jean-Luc Ong, who used to be a teacher, on landing his recent job as a Talent Analyst with a career walking deck.

The career walking deck helped me get my job as a Talent Analyst

[It] made me feel comfortable in terms of sharing my background in a concise way. There are so many things to think about when going into an interview and I have the tendency to yap when doing going through them.

The deck I had prepared helped me get my thoughts straight beforehand, and I was even able to review and make changes after getting feedback from my friends when I showed it to them.

One of the first things interviewers will tell you is “Tell me about yourself”

That’s such a loaded question as there are a million things that I can tell.

But does my experience washing dishes really contribute to interviewing for an HR role? Maybe it gives context, but I wouldn’t stay on that topic for too long.

Of course, the interviewers had my resume in hand but when I was able to show visuals and pictures, I was able to convey my experiences clearly, concisely, and with passion (without feeling like I was boring the interviewer).

Through the deck, I was also able to show things that my resume didn’t show but gave them a better idea of who I am and how I could fit in the team.

Were my pictures of me doing my hobbies, travels and adventures necessary? Maybe not. But after I got hired, was I having conversations about topics that were first mentioned on my sliding deck? Yes!

I really believe that the deck separated me from other candidates by giving me personality and it allowed me to show that I put in effort and prepared for interviewing.

I whipped out the walking deck for every interview I did!

For the jobs in which I didn’t get the role, I always received the same feedback saying that it was unique that I had the walking deck and that I should stay in touch.

I really don’t see any downside to having a career walking deck.

I should also point out that in the HR position that I am now in, Communication and PowerPoint are key skills that are needed for the role.

So it will work in your favor if the job that your applying for lists Communication and PowerPoint as key skills!

Thank you so much Jean-Luc for sharing your success story with career walking decks to encourage other job seekers to try this out as well 🙌🏼
